Sofia Varino is a New York based performance artist working with dance and video. She uses stillness, movement, contact and live sculpture to produce duration pieces in various media. Her primary concerns are the negotiations between body and language, human and nonhuman actants, urban ecologies and natural histories - and the possibility of political space.
She is a member of the Harmattan Theater Company and collaborates with artistic director May Joseph on the ongoing digital installation Chronocorpus, a multimedia archive of oceanic histories in real time. In parallel, she develops ethnographic projects about random and intentional communities in industrialized societies, collected in The Industria Tales.
She is currently working on a doctorate in Cultural Studies with a concentration in philosophy and the arts at Stony Brook State University of New York. Research interests include body theory and science studies.
